Billy Bridges

Profile

Billy, who lives in Mississauga, Ontario, began playing sledge hockey with the Kitchener Sidewinders in 1997 at the tender age of 12 years old. Having made the national team at the ripe old age of 14, Billy is on record for being the youngest player ever selected for Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team.   A former wheelchair basketball player, he has seven consecutive gold medals at the National Wheelchair Basketball Championship with Team Ontario, not to mention a Canada Games gold medal. He was on the national team at two World Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championships where he won gold in 2001 and the team MVP in 2005.   Living with the effects of spina bifida hasn’t stopped this young man him from gaining international notoriety as a powerful hockey player. He has multiple gold medals in his growing collection including those from IPC World Championships (2000, 2008), World Sledge Hockey Challenge (2007, 2008) and of course his 2006 Paralympic gold medal from Torino where he was named to the Paralympic All-Star Team.   Billy was a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2002 and is a spokesperson for Right to Play. He is an accomplished skateboarder and musician with a released CD.   His favourite NHL player is Alexander Ovechkin and his favourite NHL team is the Montreal Canadiens. Billy's father Charles is his role model.
