With two rocks remaining for Canada, Daw faced a blocked entrance to the house. Norway laying two, his only possible shot was to raise his own on the four foot to lie shot rock. And so he did with ultimate perfection, leaving Norway in a difficult situation. After the Norwegian skip peeled a Canadian guard, Daw threw a perfect guard to protect shot rock. With the hammer and last rock, Norway’s skip tried what was the only shot available: rolling off his own rock to stop right on the bottom. He made the shot, but the rock stopped short, leaving Canada with the victory and a ticket to the Gold Medal Game.
“This is the greatest day of my life,” said Daw, obviously elated at the win which sends the team to the gold medal game with Great Britain, a show down for the English speaking world that has Torino buzzing. “We’ve had our best game of the tournament. We came out strong today and we beat a very strong Norway team. They played outstanding curling.”
“Chris had the best game of his life. He pulled it off, made the shots when he had too.” commented Head Coach Joe Rea. “His five Paralympic Games experience helped us out. He was able to remain calm throughout the Game and he elevated us to the Gold Medal Game. It’s a great day for curling in Canada.”
Canada will have 11 guaranteed medals, with Hockey and Curling in the finals and more in the offing as the skiers continue to go at it in Sestriere and Pragelato.
In other news, Kimberley Joines, Brad Lennea, Scott Patterson and Jeff Penner finished out of the medals in sit-ski slalom today.
