Canada Ready to Rock at 2006 VISA Paralympic World Cup

MANCHESTER, UK – May 1, 2006 – More thrills, more excitement and more medals are projected for Canada at the second Visa Paralympic World Cup in Manchester from May 1st to 7th. Canada is sending a team of 25 of its finest and most exciting athletes to compete for international glory at this elite event.

 

The Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team is set to confirm its international domination as they face Australia, silver medalists in Athens 2004, in their first match today. On Tuesday, they will compete against host Great Britain and Sweden before the semi-finals on Wednesday and the Finals on Thursday.

In swimming, Canada is represented by a dynamic mix of veterans and up-and-comers, including multiple gold medalist Stephanie Dixon and rookie

In Athletics, Canada is sending its core group of elite athletes, including Jeff Adams, Diane Roy, Colin Mathieson and Andrea Holmes to name a few. Chantal Petitclerc is unable to attend due to injury.

Over 350 athletes from 41 countries are present to participate in four events: wheelchair basketball, swimming, athletics and cycling. Wheelchair basketball runs from May 1st to 4th. Cycling, Swimming and Athletics will be held from May 5th, May 6th, May 7th respectively.

The Visa Paralympic World Cup is the biggest international, annual multi-sport competition after the Paralympic Games and has been staged in Manchester, Great Britain for the past three years. Sanctioned by the International Paralympic Committee, the event plays a critical role in providing international competition between Paralympic Games.
