21 May 2012 - 4,200 athletes from 165 countries set to take part as Paralympic Games return to spiritual birthplace

"It's fantastic news to mark 100 days to go that we can announce that the London Games will be the biggest ever. The Paralympic Games continue to grow in size and stature each edition and it is even more pleasing that Great Britain, the spiritual birthplace of the Paralympic Movement, will get to host the biggest ever Paralympic Games later this year."
To coincide with 100 days to go until the London 2012 Paralympics, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced that they will officially be the biggest Games ever with 165 countries set to participate in the event.
This means that 19 more countries will take part in London compared to Beijing four years ago and the number of athletes set to compete will also increase from 3,951 to around 4,200. All countries have been allocated slots either through Minimum Qualifying Standards, Bipartite Agreements or Universality Wild Cards.
Sixteen countries are set to take part in their first Paralympic Games in London. They are Antigua & Barbuda, Brunei, Cameroon, Comoros, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, North Korea, San Marino, Solomon Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and US Virgin Islands.
Sir Philip Craven, IPC President, said: "It's fantastic news to mark 100 days to go that we can announce that the London Games will be the biggest ever. The Paralympic Games continue to grow in size and stature each edition and it is even more pleasing that Great Britain, the spiritual birthplace of the Paralympic Movement, will get to host the biggest ever Paralympic Games later this year.
"It's hard to believe that the forerunner for the Paralympics took place just 64 years ago at Stoke Mandeville Hospital with 16 injured war veterans, when you consider that 4,200 elite athletes will now compete in London.
"The Games won't just be the biggest ever in terms of athletes and countries either. I also believe the levels of athletic performance will reach new levels and away from the field of play London could be the Paralympic Movement's first sold out Games in terms of spectators too. A record numbers of TV viewers around the world are also set to tune in.
"The recent Paralympic test events gave us all a flavour of what we can expect later this summer, and between now and 29 August the excitement levels will continue to rise to astronomical levels."
The seed for the Paralympic Games was sown in Great Britain in 1948 when the Stoke Mandeville Games took place on a small area of grassland at the back of the spinal injuries hospital and featured 16 injured war veterans competing in Archery.
Twelve years later, 400 athletes from 23 countries gathered in Rome, Italy for the first Paralympic Games which featured eight sports.
Since 1960 the Games have taken place every four years and not only have the numbers taking part increased but so have the levels of athletic performance. Since Seoul in 1988 the Paralympics have taken place in the same city and same venues as the Olympics, a trend that will continue until at least 2020.
Four years ago Beijing staged the best Paralympic Games to date and a staggering 279 world records were broken. A cumulative TV audience of 3.8 billion watched the Games around the world, and a further 3.44 million spectators packed out the venues.
With 100 days to go until the start of this year's Paralympic Games, London 2012 is on course to be a record breaker. In addition to a record number of athletes and countries taking part, more than one million tickets, an unprecedented number so many months ahead of a Games, were sold last September. Tickets went back on general sale on Monday (21 May).
LOCOG also recently announced a record-breaking collection of Rights Holding Broadcasters who will screen the Paralympic Games across the globe this summer. The total worldwide broadcast deals for the London 2012 Paralympic Games will see a record £10 million in revenue generated from the sale of broadcast rights to the Paralympics – greater than for any previous Games.
These deals will provide the Paralympic Games and Paralympic Sport with the strongest Games broadcast coverage ever received, ensuring the widest possible audience can enjoy the Games. It is estimated a cumulated audience of around 4 billion people will watch the Games between 29 August and 9 September.
May 15, 2012 (Vancouver) – Canada’s top wheelchair tennis athletes are heading to Seoul, South Korea for the BNP Paribas World Team Cup, as the ITF’s flagship annual wheelchair tennis team competition takes place May 21-27, with 52 teams representing 28 countries.
Taking place in Asia for the first time, this year the World Team Cup is also boasting a new title sponsor in BNP Paribas and a new format. While 16 teams have contested the men’s World Group I and World Group II as well as the women’s World Group in recent years, just 12 teams will participate in each of the World Groups in 2012. Canada is sending two teams to the tournament, with its men’s and quad wheelchair tennis squads gearing up to compete in the event.
“It’s an exciting time as our Canadian athletes have been battling for spots in the London 2012 Paralympic Games over the past few months,” said Janet Petras, director of wheelchair tennis, Tennis Canada. “Now the focus is on the World Team Cup and capitalizing on the men’s team’s solid win in the qualification event, and the quad team’s Top 4 performance last year.”
Canada’s men’s team, who came out winners of the Americas qualification event earlier this year in Mexico City, is competing in World Group II. The team will be led by national champion Joel Dembe (Toronto) alongside Philippe Bedard (Montreal) and Eric Gilbert (St. Raymond, Que.). The team will be coached by Ben Armstrong from Toronto. The goal will be to prevail against the strong competition from countries such as Australia, South Africa, Thailand, Slovakia, and Germany in order to remain in World Group II and avoid another qualification round for next year’s event.
The quad team will be represented by Adrian Dieleman (Hamilton, Ont.) and Gary Luker (Ancaster, Ont.) and will be coached by Tennis Canada’s national high performance coach Christian Gingras. Dieleman and Luker will attempt to defend last year’s fourth-place finish against powerhouse teams from the United Kingdom, United States, Israel, and Sweden. Unfortunately, the team will be without the services of former world No. 2 Sarah Hunter, who is still battling a serious shoulder injury.
Mara Chaplin from Toronto will provide physical therapy services for both teams.

OTTAWA, ON - All three of Canada's Paracanoe athletes made it to the podium at the Paracanoe World Championships in Poznan, Poland today as the team captured medals across four events.
Christine Gauthier of Pointe-Claire, QC lead the field by winning gold in the Women's K1 200 metre LTA event for a second consecutive year. Gauthier first won the title of World Champion in the same event last August and prevailed again today in windy conditions by winning the race in a time of 57.7 seconds. She won by a margin of over three seconds with the second place competitor from Spain finishing at 1:01.1 and the third place Romanian at 1:03.0.
Teammate Christine Selinger of Regina, SK won medals in two events, including a silver medal in the Women's V1 200 metre in the TA/A category and a bronze in the Women's V1 LTA. The V1 uses a modified outrigger boat paddled with a single canoe blade. Paracanoe athletes are classified for events based on the mobility they have in their legs, trunk and arms.
Dave Waters of Dartmouth, NS won his first medal at Worlds with a third place finish in the Men's V1 200 metre in the TA class. Waters finished in a time of 1:02.4 and was 3.4 seconds off the winner from Great Britain.
Gauthier, Selinger and Waters all qualified to compete at the World Championships at National Trials in Burnaby, BC last month. While all three have competed at World Championships in previous years, this year's Championships required athletes to be ready to compete several months earlier than usual due to the timing of the Olympic Games. Paracanoe will make its debut on the programme at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The action continues from Poznan, Poland tomorrow as the first Sprint World Cup gets underway with heats and semi-finals on Friday. Finals and 200 metre events will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

OTTAWA – On Wednesday May 16, 2012, Conservative MP John Weston hosted the first ever National Life Jacket and Swim Day on Parliament Hill, joined by the Minister of Health, health, fitness & safety partners Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, the Canadian Red Cross, and Swimming Canada, Parliamentary Fitness Initiative Co-leaders, Liberal MP Kirsty Duncan and NDP MP Peter Stoffer, and other parliamentarians. Also present were special guests Tobias Oriwol, 2012 Olympian, and Brianna Jennett-McNeill, 2012 Paralympic Team nominee.
“On National Life Jacket and Swim Day, we want to remind children, youth and their caregivers that wearing a lifejacket in and around open water can save a life,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “Swimming and water sports are a great way for children and youth to be active during the summer season. Our government wants children and youth to live active, healthy lifestyles, and to safe while doing so.”
“This is the first-ever event of its kind on Hill as we bring together significant partners, all dedicated to insuring the improved health and well-being of Canadians”, said MP Weston. “With rising rates of childhood obesity, we’re keen to promote healthy, safe activity for all Canadians.”
“Life jacket and swimming day go hand in hand. Water based activities are a way of life for all Canadians in the summer. Let’s learn to swim and let’s be water smart and water safe,” said Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and National Coach, Swimming Canada.
“Last year, Canadian Tire Jumpstart worked with the City of Ottawa on the Jumpstart ‘I Love to Swim’ program, which helped 500 kids learn to swim,” said Dan Thompson, President for Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “It is great to have been able to work with the City of Ottawa and this breakthrough program that teaches kids the importance of being water safe while giving them an opportunity to learn to swim. As Wednesday’s event there will be 18 students from the York Public School in Ottawa, many of whom participated in the Jumpstart ‘I Love to Swim’ program.”
This event is in keeping with the priorities of the Parliamentary Fitness Initiative, a program in place since 2009, which invites all MP’s and Senators to engage in 20 minutes of physical activity daily. This special day follows the success of the inaugural Bike Day on the Hill, May 9, with PFI partners, Ottawa Bike Club coach and youth, and bikes lent to parliamentarians by Kunstadt Sports. With the support of all twelve local governments in the riding that MP Weston represents, this Hill Initiative has grown into the creation of National Health & Fitness Day, to be recognized on the first Saturday of June each year. On June 2nd, 2012, Mr. Weston will launch National Health & Fitness Day from Whistler, BC and mark the day with events throughout the riding.
