Gregory Westlake
Profile
Greg, who hails from Oakville, Ontario, began playing sledge hockey with the Mississauga Cruisers in 2001 and made his debut in 2003 with Team Canada at the age of 17.
Greg, who had both legs amputated when he was 18 months old, is the youngest in a family of four children. Scott Westlake, Greg’s older brother, was an active athlete and provided the motivation for Greg to be involved with sports. Greg learned to think positively and to look beyond his handicap at a very young age. When he was a child, Greg wore a set of artificial legs so that he could play hockey with his brother and neighbourhood kids.
Now 24 years old, Greg Westlake is an offensive star for Team Canada and has gold medals from the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games and the 2008 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championships. At the 2008 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, Greg scored the game winning goal with just eight seconds to go to defeat Norway in the gold medal game. In 2007 he was Team Canada’s MVP.
Greg is an avid golfer and at the age of 15 recorded his first hole-in-one. His favourite professional hockey player is Jarome Iginla and his favourite NHL team is the Toronto Maple Leafs.
