OTTAWA, ON, September 7, 2011
The
Canadian Paralympic Committee would like to recognize the incredible commitment
and contribution of Alex Baumann, Chief Executive Officer of Own the Podium, to
the Canadian Paralympic Team and Movement. His deep knowledge and experience
within high performance sport, as well as his unparalleled commitment and energy
to lead Canada to the podium has greatly impacted Paralympic programs within
Canada.
Mr. Baumann's approach challenged athletes, coaches and
administrators to demand a higher level of performance and to constantly strive
to be the best. The Canadian Paralympic Team's third-place finish at the
Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games is a testament of this philosophy.
"Alex had an unapologetic approach in his demand for gold. He helped Canadians believe in their ability to be among the best in the world," said Henry Storgaard, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Paralympic Committee. "He also believed that there was no difference between an Olympic and Paralympic medal and that attitude has elevated the Paralympic Movement to a new height. He has made us proud to be Canadian and has inspired athletes with a disability to show the world that Canada is a serious contender for the podium.
The Canadian Paralympic Committee respects Mr. Baumann's decision to step down as the leader of the Own the Podium, and wishes him all the best in his new role as Chief Executive Officer of High-Performance Sport New Zealand.
