Three more first place finishes for Amber Thomas at Can Am meet

Amber Thomas of Drayton Valley, Alta., placed first in three more races on Friday night at the Can Am Para swimming competition being held at the University of Minnesota. 

After victories in the 400 freestyle and 100 breaststroke in the S11 category for the visually impaired on Thursday, the 17-year-old Thomas prevailed again in the 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. 

Summer Mortimer of Newmarket, Ont., Canada’s big star at the world championships last year with four gold medals – all in world record time – renewed her acquaintance with the top of the podium winning the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle in the S10 category. 

Canada’s swimming ace on the men’s side, Benoit Huot of Montreal collected wins in 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly in the men’s S10 division to bring his gold medal count to three. 

More than 60 Canadian Para swimmers are at the competition which is the first selection meet to determine the team for the Para Pan Pacific Championships August 10-14 in Edmonton. 

Competition ends Saturday.
