Stilwell captures a second gold medal at IPC Worlds

OTTAWA - Michelle Stilwell of Nanoose Bay, BC captured her second gold of the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships.  Stilwell crossed the line first to earn gold in the T52 wheelchair classification 200-metres. She also set a second championship record clocking in at 37.12; her first came on opening day winning gold and setting a new championship record time of 20.35 seconds in the 100-metres.

  • Jason Dunkerley of Ottawa, ON and guide runner Greg Dailey of Toronto, ON advanced in the T11 1500-metres by finishing second in their heat running 4:15.40.
  • The T11-13 4x100-metres relay team clinched a spot in the final by placing third in their heat with a time of 47.46; the team consists of Richard Carr and guide Evan Porter both of Port Elgin, ON, Brandon King of Brampton, ON and guide Mark Harris of Toronto, ON, Dustin Walsh of Coquitlam, BC and guide Steve Walters of New Westminster, BC and Braedon Dolfo of Langley, BC.
  • The T53/54 wheelchair 4x400-metres relay team, following an appeal of an apparent lane violation, will now compete in the final.  Racers Colin Mathieson of Sherbrooke, QC, Eric Gauthier of St-Faustin Lac-Carre, QC, Jean-Paul Compaore of Sherbrooke, QC and Alexandre Dupont of Bradwell, SK will now set their sights on a podium finish.
  • Kyle Whitehouse of St. Catharines, ON finished the T38 100-metres in fifth place crossing the line in 12.36.
  • In the T54 wheelchair 5000-metres Josh Cassidy of Guelph, ON qualified by placing second in his heat in 10:39.88; Michel Filteau of St-Jean Baptiste, QC and Kyle Shaw of Saskatoon, SK did not advance in 11:01.37 and 11:07.34 respectively.
  • Diane Roy of Sherbrooke, QC won her T54 wheelchair 800-metres heat in 1:57.05 securing her spot in the final.
  • Mississauga, ON’s Curtis Thom advanced in the T54 200-metres racing in 26.50; Alexandre Dupont of Bradwell, SK did not advance and Colin Mathieson of Sherbrooke, QC was disqualified for a lane violation.

Head Coach Ozzie Sawicki on day 3 in New Zealand; “Monday saw both the 4x400-metres wheelchair relay team and 4x100-metres visually impaired relay team advance to finals later this week. The relay program is a new project focus for the Para-Athletics program, and reaching the finals is the first step in the right direction. Michelle Stilwell set a second Championships record in the T52 200-metres on route to her second gold medal of these championships. Jason Dunkerley (with Guide Runner Greg Dailey) ran a tactically solid heat in the 1500-metres T11 qualifying for the final. Kyle Whitehouse, one of the up-and-coming athletes in the program provided an unexpected fifth place finish in the T38 100-metres final.  We expect to see positive results continue Tuesday with four finals on the schedule.”
