Selection Camp For 2012 Senior Men’s & Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball Teams In Las Vegas

(Las Vegas, NV) The top Canadian wheelchair basketball players will converge in Las Vegas, Nevada for the Senior Men’s and Women’s National Team selection camp January 8th to 13th, 2012. They will vie for a shot to represent Canada at the 2012 Paralympic Summer Games.

The selection camp, being held at the University of Neveda, Las Vegas, will help determine the 24 athletes (12 men and 12 women), which will compete for Canada at a number of marquee international events in 2012, most notably the Paralympic Summer Games in London, England.

The camp roster includes 15 athletes (9 men and 6 women) with Paralympic Games experience including 6 men and 2 women who have earned multiple Paralympic medals.

The Senior Men’s National Team is amongst the top wheelchair basketball teams in the world. The Canadian Men are the defending silver medallists from the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. They won back-to-back Paralympic gold medals in 2000 and 2004 and have reached the podium at five of the last six consecutive World Championships.

The Senior Women’s National Team is amongst the most successful and dominant teams in Canadian amateur sport history. The team captured three consecutive Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996, and 2000, and bronze in 2004. They have also reached the podium at six consecutive World Championships.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada is the national sports governing body responsible for the organization of wheelchair basketball in Canada. It is a non-profit, charitable organization that is the Canadian member to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF).
