Tennis Canada announced Thursday that former international wheelchair tennis
great Kai Schrameyer has been named national development coach. Kai is an
outstanding individual with unparalleled business and athletic
skills.
Schrameyer was world champion in 1993, ranked No. 1 in the world
during the 1993-94 ITF seasons, a silver medalist at the 2000 Paralympics in
Sydney, bronze medalist at the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona, and 10-time German
national champion.
‘‘Kai brings an amazing tennis record to our national
program as he focuses on recruiting and sustaining the next generation of
players in Canada,’’ said Janet Petras, director, wheelchair tennis, Tennis
Canada. ‘‘He has a wealth of international success and will assist our high
performance athletes in their quest for Paralympic
excellence.’’
Schrameyer holds a Masters in Sport Administration from
Georgia State University, a law degree from the University of Heidleberg, and an
Economics degree from the University of Michigan. Since 2004, Schrameyer has
been employed by Coca-Cola as the Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010 Olympic Project
Teams Coordinator. He directed project management for all Vancouver 2010 Olympic
and Paralympic activations, and provided a support function for the Olympic
Torch Relay and Environmental Sustainability program.
Schrameyer has
coached for the BC Wheelchair Sporting Association and as a Development Coach
for the ITF Silver Fund Program in Boliva. He is fluent in German, English,
French, Italian and Spanish. Schrameyer makes his debut at the 2010 Birmingham
National Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Niagara-on-the-Lake this
week.
