January 22, 2011
OTTAWA - Michelle Stilwell of Nanoose Bay, BC won gold late last night in Christchurch, New Zealand in the T52 wheelchair classification 100-metres. Stilwell crossed the line first in a new Championship record time of 20.35 seconds.

Still recovering from a leg injury, Brampton, ON native Kyle Pettey’s best throw of 10.21 metres placed him in fourth in the F34 classification shot put. Pettey established a new World Record at the 2010 Commonwealth Games with a performance of 11.44 metres but Thierry Cibone of France bettered that to capture gold setting a new world mark of 11.53 metres.

In other finals Josh Cassidy of Guelph, ON finished 4th in the T54 10000-metres; Sherbrooke, QC’s Diane Roy placed 5th in the T54 5000-metres.

Ozzie Sawicki, Head Coach on Canada’s first day at the IPC World Championships; “Michelle Stilwell continued to demonstrate her dominance and set the tone for a positive World Championships in her class. Our other athletes did not compete to the same level of expectation, but qualifying heats did see a number of our athletes move on to their respective finals. Although Diane Roy and Josh Cassidy did not reach the podium, they still hold opportunities in events later in the competition. Kyle Pettey, fighting through a leg injury sustained in a car accident late in 2010, still managed a fourth place and is recovering to a level of progression that will continue on track to London in 2012.”
