Media Advisory - Rowing BC to host a weekend of adaptive rowing and coach education

05 May 2011

When: Saturday, May 7, 2011, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Where: John MS Lecky UBC Boathouse, 7277 River Road, Richmond, BC

On May 7 and 8, 2011, Rowing British Columbia will host a weekend of hands-on instruction and on-water activities for athletes and coaches interested in adaptive rowing. This event is part of Rowing BC’s commitment to developing the sport of rowing for persons with a disability.

The weekend will focus on practical training and coaching, with an emphasis on boat and ergometer work. Coaching staff will be led by Jeff Dunbrack, Lead Coach of the Rowing Canada Aviron Adaptive National Rowing Program, and Martin George, Rowing BC Adaptive Coach.

Also in attendance will be rower Meghan Montgomery, a member of Canada's National Adaptive Rowing Team. Meghan was part of Canada's World Champion Mixed 4+ crew at the 2010 FISA World Championships at Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.

The weekend is not exclusively targeted to competitive rowing; this experience is designed for everyone including novices, current rowers, athletes from other sports, and coaches of all levels. The UBC Boathouse is fully accessible, and boats will be available for all classes of adaptive rowing.

There will be a photo opportunity and media availability from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on May 7, as Rowing BC's future adaptive rowing stars take to the water in adaptive rowing equipment provided through a grant from the Canadian Paralympic Committee's Para-Equipment Fund. CPC Past President Carla Qualtrough will be on hand to present the equipment to Rowing BC.
