EDMONTON
– Katarina Roxon of Stephenville, N.L., capped a solid performance by
the Canadian team at the Pan Pacific Para Swimming Championships on
Sunday with a gold medal in the women’s 100-metre breaststroke
Roxon, 18, took the gold in the S8 disability category clocking one minute and 27.02 seconds.
Canada
earned eight more medals in the event. Summer Mortimer of Ancaster,
Ont., Aurélie Rivard of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., and Megyn Coughlan
of Ottawa were second, third and fourth respectively in the S10 race;
Valérie Drapeau of Montreal and Cynthia Berringer of Mississauga, Ont.,
second and third in the S5; Brianna Nelson of Victoria and Sarah Mehain
of Vernon, B.C., also 2-3 in the S7; Valérie Grand’Maison of Montreal
and Rhea Schmidt of Winnipeg second and fifth in the S13, Amber Thomas
of Drayton Valley, Alta., second in the S11and Kirsti Kasko of Okotoks,
Alta., and Justine Morrier of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu third and sixth in
the S14.
In Sunday’s relays, Canada collected silver medals in the women’s 4X50 and 4X100 freestyles and men’s 4X100 freestyle.
In
the final medal standings. Australia was first with 35 gold, 25 silver
and 19 bronze, the U.S., followed at 27-26-16 and Brazil was third at
24-13-14. Canada ranked third in total medals at 62 and sixth based on
gold medal count at 12-24-26.
The Canadian gold medallists this
week were Thomas with five, Mortimer with two, Roxon, Grand’Maison,
Morrier, Benoit Huot of Montreal, and men’s 4X100 freestyle relay in
the S14 category.
