Hallat wins second consecutive IPC Canadian Championship race

18 March 2011

KIMBERLEY, B.C.  (March 17, 2011) – Matt Hallat, who competes in the men’s standing category, won his second consecutive Canadian Championship title Thursday.

Hallat, who calls Squamish, B.C., home, finished the slalom with a two-run combined time of one minute, 23.41 seconds.

“I’ve had an amazing three days here,” said Hallat. “Everything is starting to come together. It’s very encouraging.

“I skied really well, it was actually the best I’ve skied all year. I was just really motivated. The second run was very challenging but I had the right line and did everything I needed to do.”

The 26-year-old won his third consecutive race. He was crowned Canadian Champion in giant slalom on Tuesday and won the IPC Coupe Nor-Am giant slalom race Wednesday.

“Matt is showing great consistency with a third win in a row,” said World Cup head coach Sven Pouliot. “He is developing into a complete skier who can win in all conditions and hard courses. Today we had spring snow conditions in the second leg of the race with a challenging course and he built on his first run lead.”

Also in the men’s standing category, Kirk Schornstein, of Spruce Grove, Alta., finished second with a time of 1:27.94.

Michael Whitney, of North Bay, Ont, and Braydon Luscombe, of Duncan, B.C., finished fourth and fifth respectively. Both athletes are part of the Prospect Group program.

Andrea Dziewior, of Nanaimo, B.C., and Josh Dueck, of Vernon, B.C., were both first after the first run in their respective categories but were not able to finish the second run. Melanie Schwartz, of Toronto, Ont., in the ladies category, was not able to finish the race.

“Kirk is showing consistency, but what's exciting is that he is improving every run,” said Pouliot. “Too bad for Josh, Andrea and Mel that they did not finish the second run, they all had a good first run and were all racing hard to win the race. I am sure they are looking for revenge tomorrow.”

The last event takes place on Friday - the Nor-Am slalom.
