Canadians reach five more swimming finals at Global Games

03 October 2011

LOANO, Italy (October 1, 2011) - Mike Qing of Regina took fourth spot in the men's 200-metre butterfly for Canada's best result on Saturday in swimming action at the Global Games.

The swimming competition at the Global Games features athletes in the S14 disability category (intellectual disability) as they tune-up for next year's Paralympic Games in London.

Qing, also fourth in the 200 backstroke on Thursday, was just over a second off the third place time. He had a great second length moving into the third place and stayed in contention until the finish.

Canada was fifth in the men's 4X50-metre medley relay with Adam Rahier of Port Moody, B.C., Dalton Boon of Tsawwassen, B.C., Maxime Rouselle of St. Alexandre, Que., and Magnus Batara of Richmond B.C.

Seventh place finishes were posted by Rahier in the 400 freestyle and Kirstie Kasko of Okotoks, Alta., in the women's 400 freestyle. Michael Heath of Woodstock, Ont., was eighth in the men's 200 breaststroke.

It was a good day for us,'' said Swimming Canada's Para swimming head coach Craig McCord. ''We already have swimmers clocking personal bests and we are barely a month into the new season.''

After two days of swimming action Canada has three medals ( a gold and two bronze). Competition continues Sunday.
