MONTREAL – Christine Gauthier of Pointe-Claire, Que., and Christine
Selinger of Regina will have an opportunity to defend their world titles
next month in Hungary following Saturday’s canoe and kayak selection
trials at the Olympic Basin on parc Jean-Drapeau.
Selinger qualified in two events: the LTA V-1 and the LTA K-1 while
Gauthier qualified in the LTA K-1. Named to the men’s team were Jean
Dagher of Ottawa in the LTA K-1, Tony Flores of Edmonton in the TA K-1
Sulieman Muse of Toronto in the A K-1 and Dave Waters of Dartmouth,
N.S., in the LTA V-1.
‘’The level of Paracanoe in Canada as well as the participation are
increasing which is great to see,’’ said CanoeKayak Canada’s high
performance manager and Paracanoe team coach Christine Bain. ‘’Today's
results demonstrate we are on track for 2011 Worlds and we are one step
closer to our 2016 Paralympic goals. We plan to continue increasing the
level and keep pushing for best possible results.’’
It was also the first day of races to finalize Canada’s sprint team
for the world championships set for August 17-21 in Szeged, Hungary.
The spots for the singles events (K-1 and C-1) were determined at
the World Cups last month while these trials will decide the pairs (C-2,
K-2) and fours (C-4, K-4) teams.
Some opening day winners included for the men: Ryan Cochrane of
Windsor, N.S., and Hughes Fournel of Dorval, Que., in the K-2 200;
Gabriel Beauchesne-Sévigny of Trois-Rivieres, Que., and Andrew Russell
of Dartmouth, N.S., in the C-2 1,000; Corey Hamilton of Ottawa, Chris
Mehak of Toronto, Andrew Pickrem of Waverley, N.S., and Brady Reardon of
Burlington, Ont., in the K-4 1,000 and Richard Dober Jr., of
Trois-Rivieres, Que., and Steve Jorens of Richmond Hill, Ont., in the
K-2 1,000.
For the women: Geneviève Beauchesne-Sévigny of Trois-Rivieres and
Una Lounder of Dartmouth in the K-2 500, Mallorie Nicholson of Oakville
and Laurence Vincent-Lapointe of Trois-Rivieres in the C-2 500; and
Mylanie Barré of Lac-Beauport, Que., Kristin Gauthier of Ottawa, KC
Fraser of Mississauga, Ont., and Gen Orton of Lake Echo, N.S., in the
K-4 500.
This weekend’s trials is also be a selection event to choose the
Canadian team for the world junior championships July 29-31 in
Brandenburg, Germany.
