Bronze medal for Brent Lakatos on Day 2 of IPC Worlds

OTTAWA - Brent Lakatos of Dorval, QC won bronze yesterday at the IPC World Championships in Athletics being held in Christchurch New Zealand.  Lakatos crossed the line third in a time of 15.07 seconds in the T53 classification wheelchair 100-metres. This is Canada’s second medal of these Championships; Michelle Stilwell won gold earlier in the T52 wheelchair 100-metres. The IPC World Championships continue through to January 30th.

Other Day 2 Canadian performances

  • In the T53 wheelchair 100-metres final Eric Gauthier of St-Faustin Lac-Carre, QC finished 7th in 16.04 seconds
  • Saskatoon, SK’s Keira-Lyn Frie finished 6th in the T54 wheelchait 100-metres crossing in 18.20 seconds
  • Colin Mathieson of Sherbrooke, QC finished 7th in the T54 100-metres final in 14.93
  • Martha Gustafson of Toronto, ON set a championship record in the F52 shot put throwing 3.45 metres, which was good for third place in a competition which combined F52/53 competitors. This was a non-medal event.
  • Sherbrooke, QC’s Jean-Paul Compaore finished in 1:38.22 for 6th place in the T54 wheelchair 800-metres
  • Kyle Whitehouse of St. Catharines, ON advanced in the T38 100-metres with a seasonal best time of 12.25 seconds
  • Carleton Place, ON’s Noella Klawitter qualified with a time of 5:22.42 in the T12 1500-metres placing 4th in her heat

Head Coach Ozzie Sawicki; “Our second day of competition generated a series of positives including Martha Gustafson’s Championship record throw of 3.45-metres in the F52 Shot Put, and a bronze medal finish by Brent Lakatos  in the T53 100-metres. A number of strong performances included 6th place finishes by Keira-Lyn Frie and Jean-Paul Compaore in their respective events, both having reached their first major event finals. In addition both Kyle Whitehouse and Noella Klawitter advanced to their respective finals later this week. The team certainly remains confident as we move into a busy third day for a number of our Canadian athletes.”

The Canadian men’s relay teams are also in action today; the T53/54 wheelchair 4x400-metres takes to the track in heat 2 at 11:10 local time (5:10pm eastern time), followed by the visually impaired T11/12/13 4x100-metres in heat 1 at 12:00 local time (6:00pm eastern time).
