Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on the Opening of the IV Parapan American Games

14 November 2011

Over the next nine days, more than 1,500 athletes representing over 30 countries will compete in the IV Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Team Canada is proud to be among them.

The Parapan American Games are an important event for the development of Canadian athletes with disabilities and provide them with valuable training and competition experience. For many sports, these Games will serve as a qualifying event for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

Our Government is proud to support all the athletes that make up Team Canada at these Games and to have provided funding to the Canadian Paralympic Committee—the organization responsible for sending our teams to Guadalajara.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Government of Canada, and all Canadians, I wish all our athletes the much success as the IV Parapan American Games officially open. Your talent and determination are an inspiration and source of pride for Canadians of all ages and backgrounds across the country.
