Parapan American Games begin Saturday in Mexico

OTTAWA – The 2011 Parapan American Games will officially get underway on Saturday November 12 in Guadalajara, Mexico kicking off with the Opening Ceremonies.  The Games run November 12 to 20 with athletics (track and field) competition beginning on Monday November 14.

The first day of athletics at the Parapan American Games will see 11 of the 25 Canadian team members in action.  Notably six athletes will have a chance at a medal on day one of athletics as they will compete in a final or have the chance to advance to the final taking place later in the schedule on the same day.  Kevin  Strybosh (discus throw) of London, Ont., Alister McQueen (100m) of Calgary, Atla., Kyle Whitehouse (100m) of Ste-Catherines, Ont., Richard Ball (400m) of Orillia, Ont., and Jackie Marciano (400m) of Halifax, N.S., will all get a shot at the podium.  Isaiah Christophe of Brampton, Ont., is slated to compete in the 100-metre wheelchair T54 classification semi-final with the final slated for later the same day.   

Also on day one of athletics competition, Braedon Dolfo of Langley, B.C., will get his first taste of competition this season when he and guide runner Cody Boast of Ottawa, Ont., line up in the men’s visually impaired 100-metres semi final. Dolfo is returning from a hip injury and will be looking to qualify for the final.
