Cycling team wins four medals on Day One of the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara

Canada has won its first medal of the Games and it is gold!
Reigning world cycling champions Robbi Weldon (Thunder Bay, ON) and guide Lyne Bessette (Knowlton, QC) were the second Canadian pair off in the first cycling heat of the day, the 21.1 km mixed time trial road race (Blind Tandem), but finished first on the podium with a final time 24:54.45 to win Canada’s first medal of the Games.
The first competitors for Canada at these Games starting their time trial at 9:04 a.m. were the tandem of Daniel Chalifour (Lac-des-ecorces, QC) and pilot Ed Veal ( Queensville, ON) who finished third to win a bronze medal with a time of 25:43.12. Sandwiched between the two Canadian teams were Karissa Whitsell and Lisa Turnball of the United States.
Later this morning, still in the cycling time trial, Rico Morneau (Ste-Martine QC) won the bronze in the H3 division and Shelley Gautier (Toronto, ON) won silver in the T1 division.
Canada won a total of four cycling medals this morning. Cycling competition is now finished for today.
Today’s road races were run through the historic downtown area of Guadalajara.
