June 11, 2011 – With 1,000 days to go until the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Russia, the Canadian Paralympic Committee looks to continue Canada’s winning ways in winter sport and has already helped start preparing the athletes who will wear the maple leaf in Russia.
At the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, Canada placed third in both the overall medal count and the gold medal count. Canada’s performance goal for Sochi has not yet been set, but athletes such as biathlete Mark Arendz are training hard and are determined to excel in Sochi.
“Being at home in Vancouver for my first Games will be something I will remember for the rest of my life,” said Arendz, who had a breakthrough season in 2011. “Sochi 2014 will be a completely different experience and I look forward to the challenges that will come on the trail to Sochi.”
The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games will take place from March 7 to 16, 2014.
Arendz was part of Canada’s inaugural Paralympic Excellence Series at Carleton University last month, which brought together more than 130 top coaches, support staff, specialists and medal potential athletes to learn from each other and enhance preparation for future Games.
As Russia celebrates 1,000 days to go, there will be numerous events and celebrations in Moscow, Sochi and several other Russian cities, including sport demonstrations hosted by Paralympic athletes, events with the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games mascots and musical theatre.
