Canadian Paralympic Team Reps First to Tour 2010 Games Sites

28 July 2006

VANCOUVER, July 28, 2006 – The Canadian Paralympic Committee is the first National Paralympic Committee to conduct a site tour of venues for the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.

The site visit provided Canadian officials with key information to better prepare the 2010 Team to achieve our goal of a Top 3 Nation ranking.

“Canada’s Team will be ready to compete against the best in world,” said CPC Chief Operating Officer Brian MacPherson. “Our High Performance personnel will spare no effort to ensure that Canadian Paralympians reach peak performance levels at the 2010 Winter Games.”

A delegation led by Rob Needham, Senior Manager of High Performance toured the facilities and discussed sport services, transportation, accommodation, accreditation and other games-related issues with officials from the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC) looking for a home-field advantage for Canadian athletes. Canadian officials also reviewed the Paralympic village plans and other competitive and non-competitive venue arrangements and solidified their relationships with their working partners at VANOC.

The site visit is the first time CPC has met with the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee this far in advance of the opening of the Games. Traditionally, the CPC conducts two to three site visits but as host for the 2010 Winter Games, Canada will have an opportunity to engage in much closer scrutiny to help ensure top conditions for our athletes.

CPC’s enhanced Games preparation plan will supplement additional resources flowing through the Own the Podium 2010 initiative in support of achieving the Top 3 overall goal by Canadian Paralympic Athletes.
