Canadian Paralympic Committee Extends Congratulations to the 18 Para-Sport Recipients of the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards

Ottawa, ON (November 18, 2010) - The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) would like to congratulate the incredible coaches selected by the Coaching Association of Canada to receive the 2010 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards. These prestigious awards were given to 43 coaches in Canada this year and an unprecedented 18 of the recipients came from the Para-sport and Paralympic Movement.

“Canadian Paralympians and Para-athletes have proven to be amongst the best in the world and it is thanks to the hard work of our Canadian coaches,” said Henry Storgaard, Chief Executive Officer for the Canadian Paralympic Committee. “Behind every medal, you will find an outstanding coach, mentoring, teaching and leading the athletes towards excellence. Coaches are an integral part of every sport success story, and we are proud to support such strong leaders of the Paralympic and Para-sport Movement.”  

“The CPC Coaches Council recognizes that the progression of the coaching stream within Paralympic sport continues to grow, and that the nomination of the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards recipients suggests that we're on the right track,” said Ozzie Sawicki, Chair of the CPC Coaches Council. “It is important that Para-sport coaches are recognized for their accomplishments and we're pleased to see that this is being done in an integrated environment.”

The para-recipients of the 2010 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards are:

  • Randy Bennett (Brentwood Bay, BB): coach of Stephanie Dixon, Para-swimming
  • Peter Carpenter (Pointe-Claire, QC): coach of Valérie Grand’Maison, Para-swimming
  • Ron Jacks (Victoria, BC): coach of Stephanie Dixon, Para-swimming
  • Jean-Sébastien Labrie (Plessisville, QC): coach of Lauren Woolstencroft, Para-alpine skiing
  • Pierre Lamy (Saint-Sauveur, QC): coach of Benoit Huot, Para-swimming
  • Peter Lawless (Victoria, BC): coach of Mark Ledo, Para-cycling
  • Benoît Lebrun (Pointe-Claire, QC): coach of Benoit Huot, Para-swimming
  • Dave McDonald (Edmonton, AB): coach of Amber Thomas, Para-swimming
  • Sébastien Michel (Mont-Tremblant, QC): coach of Josh Dueck, Para-alpine skiing
  • Craig Mortimer (Ancaster, ON): coach of Summer Mortimer, Para-swimming
  • Pierre Pomerleau (Charlesbourg, QC): coach of Richard Labbé, Para-cycling
  • Sven Pouliot (Quebec City, QC): coach of Karolina Wisniewska, Para-alpine skiing
  • Joe Rea (Prince George, BC): coach of the Canadian Wheelchair Curling team
  • Ed Richardson (Brampton, ON): coach of Adam Dukovich, Boccia
  • Dave Robertson (Regina, SK): coach of Christine Selinger, Canoe and Kayak
  • Sébastien Travers (Bromont, QC): coach of Robbi Weldon, Para-cycling

The Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards were created to recognize coaches whose athletes have performed at World Championships and/or the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Canadian Paralympic Committee congratulates these individuals and remains grateful for their work in advancing the Paralympic Movement.
