Canada women's wheelchair basketball team to train with Germany, and The Netherlands in Oshawa in preperation for Parapanamerican Games

26 July 2007

OSHAWA (July 26, 2007) – The Canadian national women’s wheelchair basketball team will be training at the Recreation and Wellness Centre at Durham College, Oshawa from July 29-August 2 in preparation for the Parapanamerican Games in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.

The Canadians, playing on different teams, will take on The Netherlands and Germany.

The Canadian women are currently the World Champions, and are gearing up for the Parapanamerican Games, which take place August 12-18, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The top three teams at the ParaPanAmerican Games will qualify for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Summer Games.

“The Durham College event is a great opportunity for all of our carded athletes to get some international exposure,” said Head Coach Tim Frick. “We’ll be able to get meaningful games for our 12 senior cards and eight development cards, which means that when someone moves up to the traveling squad, they will be experienced and know what to expect."

The team boasts a strong core from the province of Ontario, including Katie Harnock, Claire Buchanon, Chantal Benoit and Misty Thomas, along with physiotherapist Sheila Forler Bauman.

Following the camp, Canada’s national wheelchair basketball players will compete at the annual Spitfire Challenge at the Etobicoke Olympium in Toronto, from August 3-6, before heading to Rio de Janeiro.

The media is invited to see and meet the world’s best wheelchair basketball players in action. Many of them are likely to be on the floor in Beijing in 2008!

The teams will train daily at different times, throughout the week.
